We believe as fishmongers that it is our job to clean up the waters from invasive species like wild caught hassa and to create a sustainable product that can feed the masses
Hassa is being caught naturally with a fishnet in their natural environment.
Hoplosternum littorale, also known by the USDA as Hassar. It’s a type of Catfish that shouldn’t be here. It’s an invasive species that is very resilient and has adopted to our environment. They battle local fish for similar food. The good thing is that we can manage their population by eating them, and we have some of the best fisherman on the job!
We also get an abundance of wild caught Hassa certain times of the year. We are able to freeze and store large amounts of this product with our IQF Tunnel. No one can compete with our quality of frozen Hassar. It is literally frozen in minutes and it gets a water glaze to protect the fish from dehydrating in the freezer. .
This is a delicious fish eaten and savored by many Guyanese; in Guyana it is called hassa, in Trinidad it’s called cascadura, in Brazil tamuatá and kwi kwi in Suriname. Hassa is a small genus of freshwater catfish in the Callichthyinae subfamily of the armored catfish family. These bottom feeders are popular aquarium fish, which is probably how they ended up in local waters when someone released their pet.
Flavor Profile: taste very similar to grilled lobster.

Hassa, as it is known in Guyana, is a freshwater fish and is a bottom feeder. In order for this fish to taste "sweet" as we Guyanese like to say, it needs to be washed and cleaned properly. The last thing you want is a rank hassa curry. Make sure to follow all of these simple steps and all of your hassa dishes will taste clean and fresh.
Here is a short video on how I would eat my hassa curry. Some people like to eat it this way and some like to pick the meat straight off of the bone as they eat. Whichever way you choose though, I hope you enjoy your hassa curry!!
There are many benefits to eating hassa, especially for children. First, fish is packed with nutrients for the brain and bones, such as omega-3 fatty acids, specifically DHA, and calcium and vitamin D, respectively.
Seafood is also a good source of protein. For the biggest nutrient kick, you’ll want to choose a fatty fish like salmon or trout, as these are the highest fish sources of omega-3’s.
These nutrients and consuming fish as part of the regular eating pattern may armor your child against heart disease, stroke, depression and more.
How Much Fish Should Kids Eat?
According to the FDA, children should eat one to two servings of fish per week, beginning at age 2.
